Post Match Game Report - Coach Ron
Game Report
This was our first game that we started to play as a unit. There was tons of support, the rucking looked good, the lineouts looked even better. There were a little bit of problems with the scrums, and the backs not getting the ball out quick enough, but all in all an outstanding effort by all players. The defense was solid, and except for a few instances, the tackling was excellent. Here is how it went down.
First Half
We started out pretty good, LPA received the ball off the kick, we charged down, rucked good, won the ball and received a penalty. Off that scrum, we won the ball but it was stolen by the LPA scrumhalf because we didn’t play it fast enough. LPA maintained ball and were award field position after 2 dangerous tackling penalties by Josh. Off that momentum LPA continued pushing down field. LPA was awarded a penalty for an infraction at the ruck and the scrumhalf took it off the back of the scrum and scored. Conversion missed. LPA 5 – 0 Miami.
The ball changed possession multiple times and a bit of kicking by us for field position started. Our lineouts looked great again this week. We were contesting for ball and got some steals. We lost possession and LPA get the ball moving out to the backs. Our back line didn’t stay in position and marked their man. The LPA flyhalf saw it, he made a big pass wide out to the wing. With no one in front of him he sprinted off for an easy try. Conversion missed. LPA 10 – 0 Miami.
The slow game started, we were going back and forth with scrums and we looked good. We were pushing and getting nice ball out to the backs. The only problem was that it wasn’t getting out fast enough to the backs, so the defensive line closed the distance quick. We were also running a bit sideways and hesitant in getting the passes off. We were slowly driving up field and winning scrums. We got a penalty and Nacho took it in hard for the try. Conversion missed. LPA 10 – 5 Miami.
We lost a lot of good ball and we had a couple of good chances. We had a nice break, it went out to the wing but we lost it on a knock on. We ran a good switch play with the outside center, but as he went into contact he threw the ball back but no one was there. Off a lineout we went straight to the backs, ball out to the wing, Josh makes a great run but we lose it because there was no support to ruck. We had another good break after winning a ruck, the ball went weak side to the wing and he grubber kicked and on an unlucky bounce it went into touch. The whistle blew for the half.
Second Half
After the break we started good with a nice maul and a huge run by Nacho, but he lost the ball in contact to the LPA scrumhalf. They went wide kicked it to our full back. Mateo recovers the ball, and makes a good run up field, goes into contact, we ruck great, ball goes to Bam Bam, who makes a good run and goes into contact, Nacho picks up and runs down inside 5 meters. We get a couple of hard chances in and we win a scrum. There was a center scissor play and Nacho picks up off the back of the ruck and makes a great quick pass to the wing, and Josh runs in for the try. Conversion missed. LPA 10 – 10 Miami.
We got a bit of a nice momentum going and started getting some scrums. LPA started to get tired and the inexperienced subs that came on were giving us some penalties at the rucks, and we got one on the 5 meter and capitalized on it with a quick tap by Nacho that put him in for his second try of the match. Conversion missed. LPA 10 – 15 Miami.
There was some nice running by some of the guys. Mateo at fullback got another kick that he took for huge run. The LPA scrumhalf was our biggest challenge. He had a great game, and was the persistent fly in our ear. Half way through the second half is when the penalties started to pick up. You could tell that LPA were tired and we were also wearing down, it went back and forth inside the 22’s for a while. As the fatigue kicked in we started to get called offside a lot. Off a lineout, LPA went out to their winger and he went wide and broke a tackle, with open field in front of him, he sprinted off and then he was high tackled. As the penalty was called, the scrumhalf took the quick tap and ran and was tackled short of the try zone, but he then made an illegal second motion from the ground and went in for the try. I was sure the referee didn’t see it, and the try was awarded. Conversion missed LPA 15 – 15 Miami.
With only 2 minutes left in the game we kicked off and the defense played good and fast, we got LPA to make a mistake with the pressure and got the ball back. We were awarded the scrum, we took it and gave a high kick, the ball catcher was tackled but he didn’t release the ball. We took the tap and gave it to Frankie who broke through the line and with only one man in front of him crashed in for the try. But the referee called it a knock on and blew the final whistle. The game video shows the evidence of the final incorrect calls by the ref, but you can’t always be perfect. Regardless of the score, we know we won that game. Final score: LPA 15 – 15 Miami.
Man Of The Match
I could have easily picked one individual for his work ethic on the field for this match, and that person is Ariel Castro. His tackling skills have progressed and his defense and field vision has grown and helped him at the outside center position. BUT, I gave the honors to the entire Miami U19 team. The effort put forth on the field, the support and overall unity of the team was amazing. As a coach I was proud of them, and as a player I would have wanted to be on the field along side them. There is a brotherhood amongst us and nothing would have broken that.
