Post Match Game Report - Coach Ron
Game Report
Except for some small mistakes the offence was looking good, but the defense was the solid part of the team on the day. Brevard showed up with only 11 players, so in good rugby spirit I offered the Brevard coach to play equal to them or to lend them players to play even. The Brevard coach went and talked to his team and came back and told me that they didn’t want any of our guys on their team and that they wanted to play us with 11. They wanted to beat us with 11. The last time we played they were short players and it was a draw, now they are short players again, and they were confident they could beat us with 11. So it was game on, 11 on 15. We could have done some things better, we needed to have quicker ball within the backs line, and some straight running would have helped a bit since Brevard was undermanned. The ball from scrumhalf to flyhalf was quick, but we were giving away the overload opportunities with sideways running. Here is what went down.
First Half
The game got off to a good start, we kicked off Brevard let it bounce and outside center DJ Hawkins knocked it on. We got a scrum, won, went to the backs and the ball went all the way out to the wing. Inside center Frankie held onto the ball a bit too long, and ran sideways before passing and we lost the overload, when it got to the wing we got pushed out. Brevard got the lineout, pass back and we get some good defense going and win the ball back at a ruck with quick thinking by Ariel. He gets tackled inside the 5 meter; Bam Bam does a quick pick up, runs right and goes down inside 2 meters. Nacho quickly sees the overload; he runs left and passes wide to winger Mateo V, who takes it in for the easy try. Conversion missed, Miami 5 – 0 Brevard.
On a Brevard scum they went to the backs and their center got a good run but lost the ball in the tackle. Frankie picked up and was dangerously tackled by DJ, with a jersey fling. DJ was given the warning by the ref for the tackle. Bam Bam was giving great ball out at the rucks and had we had great support with ball in hand, and in the tackle. On one of those great opportunities in the backs, we went wide and were again running sideways and a bad pass was thrown. It was intercepted by DJ and he ran 80 meters untouched for the try. Conversion missed, Miami 5 – 5 Brevard.
On the next kick off Frankie chased hard and the receiver caught the kick, dipped low, and Frankie smashed into him and got called for the high tackle. The ref called him over, I was sure he was going to get the warning, but he got booked the yellow card. A few repeated times we got called for offsides at the ruck, and Brevard got the penalty inside the 22. They took the tap but a great hard tackle by Hector, and some good rucking helped Olec steal the ball and we kicked out. On the throw in we went wide and passed out to the backs, and DJ high tackled Ariel. He was called over by the ref, talked to but only given a warning, no card. Two dangerous tackles by the same player, but still no card. Our player got no warning and an instant card. Frankie’s 10 minutes in the sin bin were up and he came back on. His first play back on the pitch, he has a big run and gains some field for us, but we decide to kick away and as we do, Brevard is offside. The ref blows the whistle for the half. Score Miami 5 – 5 Brevard.
Second Half
The second half started out fast. Brevard must have decided to change tactics and keep the game at the same quick pace that we play. They got a penalty inside our 22 and took the tap. The Brevard scrumhalf Andrew Berger took the tap and bashed it in solo for a hard try. Conversion missed, Brevard 10 – 5 Miami.
We got Brevard deep down the field; we were within 10 meters of the try zone. Brevard won the ball off a Miami scrum, and decided to kick, but our quick defense put pressure and a short bad kick was taken. Mateo V caught it, he gets tackled, and Frankie picks and goes hard, DJ comes to tackle but goes high and is stiff armed and practically lifted off the ground and Frankie dots down for the try, but no whistle was blown. The ref calls it a knock on. Maybe he was positioned badly, but in my eyes that was definitely a try, and the video replay show it. Frankie has had bad luck with the calls against him but its calls like that that make you work harder. Brevard was awarded the scrum but our push and defense caused Brevard to pass badly back into the try zone and they touch it down for the 5 meter scrum. Off the scrum Nacho picks it up off the back, makes a quick cut inside and touches down for the try. Conversion is good, Miami 12 – 10 Brevard.
Soon after Brevard got a scrum and Bam Bam gets called for the early tackle on the other scrummy. Brevard take the quick penalty and slowly drive it up the field with a bit of help on us being called offsides twice. This helped Brevard get down into their 22, then into their 5. They take 2 quick taps but get nothing, our defense is solid. The intensity on that try line was not going to let up and we weren’t going to give the try easily, especially on our home pitch. Not in front of our Miami Rugby brothers. The pressure caused them to misplay at a ruck and we won the penalty. Off our scrum we kick out, and give Brevard the lineout. On that lineout we get awarded a penalty and take the scrum for the offsides. On that scrum we have our first scary moment of the season, when the scrum collapsed and Brandon, Tomas, and a Brevard prop get crushed. But the boys are alright and ready to go despite the soreness.
Off the next scrum, Bam Bams quick pressure makes the Brevard #9 drop the ball, and we win a penalty for Brevard not rolling away. Nacho takes the quick tap, gains 15 meters and passes to Tomas who is right behind him in support. We ruck and go wide to the backs, and win another penalty for Brevard not rolling away. Nacho again takes the quick tap, passes to Tomas, and he knocks on. But Brevard was offside, so we decide to kick for points. Mateo V takes the kick but misses.
Brevard kicks the 22 drop, it gets way down field and they win a scrum. Our pressure at this moment was hard and crucial, they run wide and go to DJ and try to start a maul. As it goes down a Brevard player dives over the ruck and we are awarded the penalty. We kick out. On our lineout a great throw was caught by Olec, who passes to Bam Bam who is quickly tackled by DJ, who was offside. The whistle blows, Nacho takes the quick penalty, runs wide and passes to a hard charging Frankie who breaks through the line and fends off the last man. He is pulled from behind by his jersey but goes down backward and touches the ball down for the try. But his hands go to his face as he lays on the ground, and I automatically think he has knocked it on. He keeps getting in for tries, but gets the knock on called against him. The ref doesn’t blow the whistle, but looks to the touch judge, who says “yes, try!” and the try is awarded. As Frankie runs up the field, I go to him and see his watery eyes and then understand why his hands were on his face. 3 times he has scored tries and none were ever awarded. Finally with the pressure on in a moment we need it, he gets in and it counts. Conversion missed, Miami 17 – 10 Brevard.
Soon after a small tussle broke out after Olec was punched in a high tackle, but smart captaincy by Nacho, to get the team back and in control, helped to end it quickly. The game went on for a while with Brevard trying to respond to our try, but we held them down. In Brevard frustration, DJ shoulder barges Mateo I with no wrap of the arms, and the ref pulls him over for another dangerous tackle chat, and again he gets away with no card, and just a warning. After the talk the ref blows the final whistle, game over. Final Score, 17 – 10 Miami win!!!
Man Of The Match
An honorable mention goes out to Olec for a fine effort on the field, he has slowly developed into a great flanker. His lineout work and hustle at the rucks were crucial to the match. But Man Of The Match honors go to Matthew 'Bam Bam' Dardis, who had his best game yet. Earlier in the week I pulled him aside and talked to him about a change he had to make and he responded with an effort above expectations. He only took 1 run on the day, and passed every ball out. Giving our backs great passed balls, his support at every ruck and maul, and defense and pressure on Brevard scrums were visible by all in true scrumhalf fashion. Congrats, it is well deserved.
