Post Match Game Report - Coach Ron
Game Report
Jacksonville was the one team that no other coach had spoken to me about. We knew nothing of them or the way they play. 2 weeks into the start of the season, Jacksonville only had one player. They showed up with 13 guys. Brevard had offered to lend them players, but I counter offered with letting them borrow 3 of our subs, which they accepted. Which left them with Brevard for subs. We needed this win to stay in the playoff race, I wasn’t willing to let our loss come to the hands of a Jacksonville/Brevard combo team and get knocked out of the playoffs. Jacksonville had a bit of speed on them, a big kicking flyhalf, and 2 faster wingers. They were the first team that we have played that kicked. They kicked a lot of ball and tried keep the game deep in their end of the pitch. And this was the first team that matched us in the size category. Here are the details.
First Half
We received the kickoff and went wide with some good running with the backs, Ariel went into contact and we lost the ball at the ruck because the support wasn’t there. We regain possession soon after when Jacksonville kick away, Josh recovers and runs it back 60 meters, but has no support. He passes from the ground bat the ball gets knocked backward and finds touch. We win ball back after the lineout and go quickly to the left, Nacho passes to Frankie who runs it in for the try. Conversion is good, Miami 7 – 0 Jacksonville.
We had possession and Nacho kicked away a couple of time but as soon as Jacksonville recovers the ball the kick behind our wingers, and chase down the ball. Luckily a couple of kicks went directly in to touch, giving us good field position for our lineouts. Possession was going back and forth, for most of the half, especially with Jacksonville’s constant kicks. They had a couple of good runs at us, and after a recovered ball which was knocked on by Josh, they went wide and came close to scoring, but Josh was able to make up for the earlier mistake with a good tackle making the player knock on five meters from their try zone. We won the lineout, but Nacho mishandled the ball, he picked up and kicked very short, directly to the Jacksonville winger who ran toward the try zone, but was tackled into touch, close one! Later in the half, we had a couple of good efforts to try and score and came up short. A few dangerous tackle calls on Jacksonville helped to gain us some field and good hard running and rucking by the forwards put us inside the 5 meters. A pick and go by Nacho got us closer, and another pick and go by Michael put us over the line, and put Michael in for his first try. Conversion missed, Miami 12 – 0 Jacksonville.
Jacksonville’s tactics of kicking the ball continued and they kicked almost every ball possession they had till the half whistle was blown. An outstanding effort by Miami in the first half, half time score: Miami 12 – 0 Jacksonville.
Second Half
We kick off to Jacksonville and quickly recover the ball at the first ruck, but while passing, the ball was intercepted and their quick winger only had one man to beat, but Josh made a great tackle ripping the ball from him and it went into touch. After the lineout, the second half continued at a slow pace, there were a lot of stoppages in play, and the ball was in touch plenty of times. Our lineouts looked great but the slow pace of the game, due to fatigue, were starting to show and favored Jacksonville because they were still kicking balls to the back three. We drove slowly down the field and were inside the 5 meter and lost the ball, but Jacksonville ran it into their try zone and touched it down. About 12 minutes in to the 2nd half, Jacksonville made their first sub. Our player Leandro, who they borrowed, was subbed for a Brevard player. Soon after, the second Brevard player came on. You could see the difference in play, because these Brevard boys like to play crash ball and now Jacksonville started to run at us instead of kick away. We got a penalty against us for not releasing the ball and the Jacksonville flyhalf took the quick tap and made some slow good cuts, but our fatigue was showing and weak tackles were made. He gained good meters and was tackled inside the 22, but we won it back off their next scrum.
About half way through the 2nd, Jacksonville started to gain more confidence and you could see it in their play and attitude on the pitch. We looked very sluggish and all except our 2 flankers and hooker, seemed not be on their toes. A bad pass from Nacho which passed Mateo and fell to the ground was recovered by a Jacksonville player, but he was offside and we took a scrum. Off the scrum Nacho kicks away, and there was no chase by us. The ball was caught by the fullback and he kicks an up and under over our line and recovers the ball. He breaks a tackle, makes a cut, breaks another tackle, and passes one handed to the wing on the outside, who is tackled 2 meters from the try zone. The pass short and try to crash in, but we steal the ball at the ruck and kick away. The kick is recovered by the subbed in Brevard player, who sees the overload to the other side of the field, and kicks wide. Josh recovers the ball but is tackled by a player who was in front of the kicker and the penalty is called, we kick out for a lineout. Off the lineout Nacho kicks, but the ball comes off the side of his foot and goes wide to the opposite wing, which loses control of the ball, but is tackled early by Diego. The ref blows the penalty and then the subbed Brevard player takes the quick tap and crashes, then they get another crasher, but Michael steals the ball, but it is stolen back in the ruck, and we are award the penalty for not releasing. Nacho takes the quick tap and kicks, but it doesn’t find touch, he dives on the ground recovering his own ball, but he has no support and releases to a Jacksonville player who takes off running wide. He makes 2 quick step moves and loses 2 tacklers, then another move and loses the third, but is then tackled by Mateo. The player puts the ball down and another player picks and goes and is about to be tackled by Tomas, but Tomas is then tackled mistakenly by Mateo and the player breaks away. He makes one cut and passes to one of the speeding backs and he breaks away for the try under the posts. Conversion is good, Jacksonville 7 – 12 Miami.
Jacksonville started to wear down, and after their try, we picked up our defense and some good tackles helped save some try scoring opportunities for them. Nacho kept kicking away, which I wasn’t too happy with but those Jacksonville mistakes helped us out. The game continued on for another 12 minutes in a sloppy penalty fest. Some good tackling by Olec and Juaco helped save another Jacksonville try near the end of the match, and a penalty called against Jacksonville for an early jump in the lineout helped end the game. The final score: Miami 12 – 7 Jacksonville.
Man Of The Match
It was easily recognizable by the game play, who were the work horses throughout the match. In most rugby matches, it is usually hard to separate which flanker did better, unless one dominantly out played the other. But, when both flankers work as hard as Olec and Juaco did, you still cant tell which one was on top. My man of the match honors go to both of them for their outstanding work on and off the ball. They made it to almost all rucks and played as much with the backs as possible. Half way through the game you couldn't tell which one was which, and defensively they missed nothing. It took us a while to find which 2 guys were our most solid pair of flankers, and now we have. Congrats to both Juaco and Olec on an outstanding effort representing the black and gold spirit.
