Post Match Game Report - Coach Ron

Game Report

NBP showed up, and to my surprise for a team that is not in the Florida Youth Rugby Union, they had a fairly large group. I will also note that the majority of the NBP team was big guys, big tall forwards, and big slow backs. I will repeat the latter of that statement, BIG SLOW BACKS, and we didn't capitalize on that. This was one of our best defensively played matches. It was also our best played match for the forward pack. They are really starting to gel and are becoming a tough unit. The things I introduced at practice were applied and worked well. In the previous games the backs were the group that held the team together, but not for this game. There were a lot of penalties for things that we knew better not to do, hands in the ruck, playing the ball on the ground, not coming through the gate on a ruck. We lost ball repeatedly on handling errors, and not getting to the ruck quick enough. Here is how it went down.

First Half

For the first 10 minutes of the game, it was a penalty-fest, due to repeated infringements by both teams. The pressure Miami put on them was perfect and caused NBP to make a lot of mistakes. The problem with us was, that we were not capitalizing on those mistakes. We were tackling great but we weren't getting up to recover the ball, and the ruckers were not getting there to help quick enough. Some guys just avoided rucking period.

We had the ball 3 times inside our 22, and did not kick out. There was no communication with the scrumhalf/flyhalf combo, and this hurt us. The game went back and fourth for most of the half. About 20 minutes in, NBP is awarded a penalty for hands in the ruck, they take the run and crash in for the try. Conversion missed, NBP 5-0 Miami. The game continued in a back and fourth momentum with minimal kicking. When we did kick the wingers weren't getting to the ball fast enough and we lost the ground we gained. We got a great line out throw, it gets tapped back, Nacho breaks up field for a run and finally gets the ball to the backs, and they are running hard and passing good, till Mateo knocks on. Ouch, that hurt because we had a try coming on that one.

After that possession every time the backs got the ball, it never went further then the inside center. Late into the first half, we get a great penalty inside the 22 when a player in front of the kicker tackles Nacho, but we lose the ball because no one is there to help ruck. Ref blows the whistle for the half.

Second Half

We came out angry in the second half, but this did not help us. We have to keep the aggression under control, there were some dangerous playing and we were lucky not to lose a player on one play. Frankie tackled a player, lifted and drove him into the ground. The referee spoke to him and he was lucky it was his first rugby game, because he would have been out. On the same penalty they kick out to touch for the lineout. They throw to the front man and he is pushed out.

On our line out, Tomas throws a perfect ball to Anthony who tosses it to Bam Bam, but due to the poor communication between him and Joaco, he passes it to the flanker Juan, who in a surprised and nervous state, kicks a fairly good ball, and loses his shoe in the process. Nacho flies up field and makes an amazing recovery of the ball. But where was the winger, Diego? Nacho is then high tackled but gets the pass off and into the backs all the way to the winger Josh who speeds in for the try. BUT, the whistle was blown and we get the penalty for the high tackle. We get the penalty inside our 22, Nacho takes the tap, but knocks on before he reached the tackler, NBP recover. We again win ball back and get almost the entire defense shifted to one side of the field. We now have a seven man overload, but no backs are calling for the ball, so the forwards take it weak side. Bad bad decision, again there was no communication from the scrumhalf/flyhalf combo.

About ten minutes in, NBP get the ball out to the backs and the outside center makes a couple of good fend offs and gets in for the try. Conversion missed, NBP 10-0 Miami. Then in another poor choice, we kick short side without the winger chasing. NBP drives up field inside our 22, but we win ball, Bam Bam calls for it, and kicks a huge kick down field but with no one to chase. NBP picks up and goes across field to the short side and get in for the try. Conversion is good. NBP 17-0 Miami. Not sticking to the game plan again, we kick short side. But this time some good rucking and support help Nacho push a hard one in for the try. Conversion missed, NBP 17-5 Miami.

With the final whistle seconds away, NBP is 5 meters from scoring, and try to maul it in. Miami fight off the maul and push it back all the way to the 22, and we are awarded a scrum. Soon after the final whistle is blow. And even in a loss, it was hard fought, and extremely impressive in my eyes. A great game.

Man Of The Match

Man of the match honors went to our hooker Tomas Velázquez. He has been extremely impressive in all of the previous matches, and in this match stood above the rest of the players on both teams. He is our youngest player and also our hardest working on the field. He is showing true leadership on the field and is becoming the heart of the forward pack. Congrats, it is well earned.
