Post Match Game Report - Coach Ron

Game Report

Brevard showed up short on numbers, 12 to be exact, but the coach insisted on playing our full 15. Little did we know that this would be one of the harder matches to play with the extra numbers. A very good pack pack with a tough back row, including a hard running No. 8, gave us trouble. The extreme hard work put in in the second half would bring us to a draw, and a close end of game effort almost resulting in a try.

First Half

We started off sketchy just after receiving the kick with a forward pass. Then we got our first glimpse of the hard running Number 8, DJ Hawkins. With a run off the back of the Brevard scrum, fear and bad tackling gave the No. 8 his first try in under 2 minutes after the start. Conversion missed, Brevard 5 - 0 Miami. On a Miami line out, we lost the ball, but recovered it in quick hard rucking, we got quick ball out to the backs and it looked like we were gonna have a good opportunity to run with the overload. But within the centers a pass was thrown without looking and as the ball hit the ground, again the fast and hard running No. 8 burst through the back line to make a quick recovery of the ball from the ground and sprint 40 meters for his second try in under 4 minutes. Conversion missed, Brevard 10 - 0 Miami.

There were a lot of Miami lost balls from players running with the ball loosely, and a lot of recovered ball from good rucking. On one of those opportunities, we moved slowly up the field. Nacho picked up off the ruck for a run and made a quick pass to Tincho, who took the ball in the opposite direction. Tincho made a couple of great step moves and it put him in the try zone for the score. Conversion missed, Brevard 10 - 5 Miami. Brevard started to maximize their efforts on the field with knowledge of the game.

They took the quick penalties and kept catching us offsides. When they saw that this was working they continued to do it throughout the game, it would help them gain easy field position. The Miami line out throws were on target, but the jumpers kept dropping the ball.

We kept getting great field position with punts to touch off penalties, but failed to find the touch line when in possession. We saw a lot of mistakes on our side, with runners not looking before passing, and players not running straight. We also failed to take advantage of the multiple Brevard mistakes. With the half time whistle approaching another quick penalty by Brevard caught us offside again, this time inside our 22 in front of the posts. Choosing to run the ball, the tap was taken and 2 quick step moves by the flanker put him in under the posts. Conversion made, Brevard 17 - 5 Miami. Brevard slowly marched up the field and got another penalty in front of the posts, 5 meters from the try zone. They chose to run again, this time giving the ball to the No. 8, but the pass was forward, and the half time whistle was blown.

Second Half

After my half time chat, we start to wake up, and the fear is shaking off. We had a bad kick at the restart, but the Brevard bad passing helps us win ball. We are tackling great, and start to stop the quick penalties.

We win a lot of balls from the rucks and the game goes back and fourth inside the 22's with constant changes of possession. On a Brevard possession, a short quick pass was thrown but intercepted by Nacho on the blindside. He breaks away for a 60 meter run being chased by the Brevard 8 man and his two flankers, and as he looks back and sees he has no support cuts toward the middle of the field. Just as he starts to run out of gas he looks left to find the hard running openside winger, Josh. He makes the pass and Josh sprints away to touch down under the posts for the try. Tincho's conversion is made, Brevard 17 - 12 Miami.

Again the possession goes back and fourth, and great running by Bam Bam and Juaco, help to get quick ball out. Brevard starts to look tired and the overload helps. Outstanding support running gives Tincho the ball and some sweet step moves puts him in for his second try. A very close conversion is missed. Brevard 17 - 17 Miami.

For the rest of the half both teams are fighting hard to get in each others try zones, but the mistakes get costly. With the final whistle quickly approaching, we are pushing the ball slowly toward our try zone. Great support running and hard rucking is pushing us close, and a Brevard mistake gives us a penalty. We take a scrum, win ball and get some good running but get pushed out, giving Brevard the line out.

The referee yells "FINAL POSSESSION, LAST CHANCE BOYS!" and we know that if it has to happen, now is our chance. We win ball off the line out and run hard inside, the rucking is looking good and we are inside our 22. Ruckers are hitting hard and the ball comes out to Anthony Kelly. He takes the contact and as he is tackled he looses the ball and it goes into touch, 5 meters from the try zone. The whistle blows and it's over. A valiant effort was made. Final score Miami 17 - 17 Brevard.

Man Of The Match:

Our man of the match honors went to Martin 'Tincho' Rodríguez-Villamil. His quick thinking with ball in hand, outstanding kicking for field position, his 2 tries, and converted kick kept us tightly in the game. Congrats on a well done effort.
