Post Match Game Report - Coach Ron

Game Report

Daytona showed up short handed with only 13 players. They were a big team and fast, and like to play aggressive good old rugby. They had a big powerful player as the eightman and he received a lot of ball and was at almost every ruck and maul. We played hard and had some great moments, but some crucial mistakes and bad decisions made on the field were costly. For the first time we had the full U19 team, helping us with 5 subs. Our best thing on the day would be the lineouts, with players from the mens team even coming up to me and saying how spectacular our lineouts looked. Here is how it went down.

First Half

We started off with a knock on the kickoff, and we quickly saw from the Daytona scrum that it was going to be a game ran off the back of their scrum by the big 8 man. Though the tackling was spectacular off the ruck, we weren’t spreading out and aligning on defense. There were too many guys going to the ruck and we weren’t winning balls. We kept giving away the ball on silly player decisions to kick the ball, and players trying to make passes while being tackled instead of going to ground and winning it off the ruck, neither was part of the game plan.

Off of a ruck inside our 22, Bam Bam decided to kick out and was too close to the defense and the ball was blocked, going back to Mateo V, who picks up and tries to kick again with a defender too close, knocking the ball back into the try zone. At that point Mateo I, picks up the ball and kicks out of the try zone, the ball doesn’t go out and Daytona recovered and runs in the 10 meters to score the try. Conversion is made, Daytona 7-0 Miami.

We had some great moments with ball in hand, but players would not keep the ball in and kept getting tackled into touch. Thankfully our lineouts were great and we were stealing a lot of the Daytona ball. On one of those wins, Nacho takes a good run, and we get a penalty, Nacho takes the quick tap and darts in for the try. Conversion is missed, Daytona 7-5 Miami. We had a good 3 minute try line stand against Daytona but they kept winning penalties against us on infractions at the ruck. Finally they would tough it out and get in for the try. Conversion is missed, Daytona 12-5 Miami. Soon after it was half time.

Second Half

Substitutions would be made, players were tired and some guys just gave up the fight. The second half would start looking better for us, playing aggressively we won a lot of balls. We were playing good at the ruck and we won a penalty. Nacho kicked for points, and converted, Daytona 12-8 Miami.

The Daytona aggressiveness would be turned up a notch and so would ours. We had some brilliant moments running by Mateo V, Nacho, and Josh. We drove up the field on a good run, but Josh made a bad choice of passing in the tackle instead of going to ground or into a maul gave the ball away close to our try zone. Daytona wins a scrum and passes to the backs, the Daytona runner gives a stiff arm with hands to the face and we get the penalty, Mateo V. kicks for points and misses, but a Daytona player charges the kick and we get a re-kick. This time Mateo converts, Daytona 12-11 Miami.

With 10 minutes left to the final whistle, the heart of our team would shine, but a big mistake out on the wing would cost us. The winger moved to the opposite side of the field and left his wing side open, Daytona smartly saw the overload. I could hear their coach call it from the opposite end of the field and Daytona capitalized on it by running to that side and scored. Conversion was good, Daytona 19-11 Miami. After the Daytona try, we would make a great attempt to score again, but fell short as the whistle blew. Final score Daytona 19-11 Miami.

Man Of The Match:

The decision of making our man of the match gets harder and harder as each week passes, due to players becoming better at the game. Honorable mentions go out to Tomas, who again played magnificent. Micheal, who had his best game yet so far. Mateo V. for an outstanding effort done in his first match. And Jose, who came on as a sub and played an amazing half. But, our man of the match honors went to our captain, Ignacio 'Nacho' Pannunzio, who again showed the heart of a true rugby player, and the reason why he is our captain. It is well deserved.
